Music Notes

“Mighty Fortress”

“A Mighty Fortress” is the most famous hymn written by Martin Luther, the great reformer, Bible translator, preacher, and theologian.

He was also a musician, who once wrote: “Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world…”

“A Mighty Fortress,” based on Psalm 46, dates from about 1529.  It is a strong hymn of faith in God’s protection and victory over evil: when “this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us.”  God will never fail us.

“Sabaoth” is the Latin version of a Hebrew word meaning “hosts,” or “armies”—thus, “Lord of Sabaoth” is an expression of God’s sovereignty.

PARDON OUR DUST

The work on the elevator continues.  The car has been ordered and will be delivered soon.  Once it arrives the car and mechanics will be installed.  The trustees are expecting the project to be finished the end of May.

Our custodians are working hard each week to keep the dust at bay, but drywall dust travels easily and settles over the weekend.  Please bear with us as we finish the construction of the elevator.

MEMORY VERSE OF THE MONTH

Our church is looking to the future.  We feel this scripture for May is appropriate for all ‘forward lookers,’ including our church and our graduating students.

"For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.  Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you.  When you search for me, you will find me; if you seek me with all your heart, I will let you find me, says the Lord."   Jeremiah 29.11-14a

Again, the bolded section should be easy to memorize.  The full verse may be more difficult but we hope you will attempt it.
